Easy Pressure Cooker Chicken and Rice Recipe

Pressure cooker makes for incredibly tender and flavorful chicken in just minutes. The rice on the other hand will be well cooked and tender. It takes less than 30 minutes for the chicken and rice to fully cook. So to prepare a delicious chicken and rice recipe, you will need to have the following ingredients.

Ingredients for the Chicken​

  • 250ml of water
  • One finely chopped onion
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 1-clove garlic
  • 3-tablespoon of tomato paste
  • 8-bone in, skin-on pieces of chicken (4 thighs and 4 drumsticks)


  • 2 tsp of cumin powder
  • 1 tsp of cardamom powder
  • 2 tsp of coriander powder
  • 1 tsp of ginger powder
  • Two bay leaves
  • 3 tsp of table salt
  • 1/2 tsp of ground pepper (black)
  • 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder

Ingredients for the Rice

  • About 1 cup of water
  • 2 cups (500ml) of white rice, rinsed

Steps for Cooking the Chicken and Rice Recipe

Pre-Heat the Cooker​

First, pre-heat your pressure cooker to ensure it’s completely warmed- up. This depends on which model of pressure cooker you are using.

Add the Onion and Oil​

In the pre-heated cooker, add your finely chopped onion and oil and stir for 5 minutes or until tender. Add the garlic powder and the other spices except for the tomato paste while stirring them for at least 30 seconds or until fragrant. Then add your tomato paste, water and salt. Finally, add the pieces of chicken and ensure the chicken is coated in the cooking liquid.

If you are using a stove-top pressure cooker, you will need to turn the heat up to high. Then lower the heat when the cooker indicates it has reached high pressure to maintain a constant temperature and start counting 12-minutes pressure cooking time. However, if you are going to use an electric pressure cooker, you just need to apply the cover and the chicken will be ready in not more than 14 minutes.

Remove the Chicken From the Cooker

When the chicken has finished cooking, remove it from the cooker and put it on a serving platter. You can cover it with a foil to keep it warm. Pour the cooking liquid from the cooker into a measuring cup to see whether it is 31/2 cups. If it is not, then add more water and if it is excess, reserve the excess for another use.

Prepare Your Rice​

To cook the rice, put the liquid back into the cooker and then add your rice. Mix well and let it cook.​

For electric pressure cookers, it takes the rice just three minutes to cook at high pressure. For stove-top pressure cooker, you need to turn the heat up to high and then lower to maintain constant temperature. Start counting 3 minutes pressure-cooking time and your rice will be ready. Serve the meal while still hot.​
